Moody photoshoots are all about emotion, depth, and story — and what you wear plays a big role in helping bring that vibe to life. If you’re feeling a little nervous about your upcoming session, don’t worry — a few thoughtful style choices and some light prep can help you feel confident and totally in your element.

Wardrobe Tips for the Moody Aesthetic

  • Stick to Earthy & Neutral Tones: Think black, charcoal, olive, rust, cream, dusty rose, navy, deep greens, and muted browns. These tones photograph beautifully and won’t pull focus from the emotion of the shot. Avoid bright neons or bold logos unless they’re part of your personal style.
  • Embrace Texture: Linen, wool, denim, leather, and cotton layers add dimension and richness — even subtle movement. A chunky knit or a flowing dress can elevate a shot without overcomplicating it.
  • Keep It Simple but Intentional: Outfits don’t need to be fancy — just thoughtfully chosen. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best. Accessories can be great, but less is more here.
  • Body Art: I love to see it! Make sure skin is well moisturized to present tattoos in their best form and all body jewelry such as facial piercings should be clean and/or polished.

Hair & Grooming Suggestions

  • Loose waves, unbrushed texture, or a relaxed updo work beautifully in moody lighting. Let your hair move with the wind — don’t over-style.
  • A natural style that feels like you is key. Clean edges (for facial hair), subtle product, or slightly tousled works well — think "refined but real."
  • If you're due for a trim or color refresh, aim to schedule it about a week ahead of your shoot.

Makeup Guidance (Totally Optional)

Makeup isn’t required — your natural beauty is enough. That said, a light application (or more) can help even out skin tones and catch light in all the right places. Remember, I do very little retouching so keep this in mind when deciding which route to go.

  • Go for matte finishes over shiny ones.
  • A soft blush or contour can subtly define your features.
  • Avoid glitter or heavy SPF-based products that can reflect flash or sunlight.

If makeup isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly fine — fresh, moisturized skin and a good night’s rest can work wonders.

Final Prep Tips for Nervous Souls

  • Hydrate + rest the day before — you’ll feel fresher and more energized.
  • Eat before the shoot so you’re not distracted or low-energy.
  • Wear clothes you feel great in. Confidence always looks good.
  • Bring a favorite playlist or a prop that makes you feel like you.
  • Most importantly: Trust the process. My job is to guide you, help you relax, and create images that feel honest, artful, and real.

You’ve got this — and I’ve got you.
